medical versus popular terms 17:25 Sep 8, 2009
From a technical anatomical standpoint, "mouth" or "orifice" in connection to an internal organ refers to an "opening to a body cavity or chamber" (per Barron's medical dictionary). By this definition the proximal and distal "mouths" of the stomach would be the lower esophageal sphincter and pyloric sphincter, respectively. However, it isn't clear to me how one would pinpoint a stomach ache as being in either of these areas, and the average lay person wouldn't be likely to use these terms anyhow, so I don't know how to get around the "pit of the stomach" problem. |
