This is actually from a text on the history of medicine:

El hospital que existía en Europa desde la Edad Media, según palabras del filósofo francés Michel Foucault, no estaba pensado para curar sino para asistir a los pobres en los momentos finales de su vida. Bajo la administración de las órdenes religiosas, esta instituación estaba al servicio de la salvación de las almas: era el sitio donde el moribundo recibía sus últimos auxilios y sacramentos.
