Sonication is used sometimes to help a solid dissolve (e.g. to reduce the viscosity of proteins). Just Google "it was sonicated" to see examples.

I should clarify that the sonication of a protein sample reduces viscosity by shearing and fragmenting the DNA; I don't think it has any effect on the proteins themselves.

agree  Dr Neil Ashby: correct but the solid doesn't dissolve )otherwise it wouldn't be a solid it be a solute) the solid is dispersed using ultrasound. I used this technique (nothing more than a probe oscillating at a certain frequecy and always described it this way.
