Spanish term or phrase: granallas de zinc metálico
se colocaron 3 ml de la solución concentrada e incorporaron 3 ml de ácido clorhídrico 0,1 N y unas granallas de zinc metálico, se homogeneizó y se dejó a 25°C durante 24 horas. Posteriormente, se agregaron 3 ml de hidróxido de sodio 0,1 N para neutralizar, con 3 ml de agua destilada, se homogeneizó y se dejó reposar a 25°C durante 24 horas. Previo a su inyección en el HPLC, se filtró una alícuota del líquido por filtro para jeringa de nylon de 0,45 µm. Esta solución quedó lista para su valoración.

neutral  Nigel Wheatley: not an incorrect translation, but the context requires that this is zinc shot, ie granules of zinc that are large enough to pick up with fingers

  -> Thank you Nigel. In the source text given no mention is made of the size of the particles, but it is obvious that they should be large enough to be seen and picked up (although not necessarily with fingers).

The zinc is used to act as a catalyst. The surface of the zinc is where the reaction takes place (or at least where it is catalysed and occurs more quickly), therefore the most typical use of zinc here is in shavings as they provide a much larger surface area to weight ratio. This is a more economic form of using the metal. Powder would be even more economic, but is awkward to handle, I always have called them zinc shavings (or any metal that is being used as a catalyst).
