Spanish to English translations [PRO] Medical - Medical (general) / pelvic exam
Spanish term or phrase:globo vesical
I find this term in a description of a patient's gynecological examination. The doctor says "EF: utero y anexos normales ... globo vesical normal."
When I try to find out what this means by searching online, I find some other examples:
also:
These and other examples still don't help me to solve this puzzle! What's the expression in English for 'globo vesical'? Or ... what does this doctor [from Mexico btw] mean by 'globo vesical normal'?

Hi Muriel. This was a fascinating discussion ... it seems clear that 'globo vesical' is best rendered as 'vesical globe' (although maybe some would simply say 'vesical distention') but it is still not clear to me what our doctor meant by 'globo vesical normal'. Thank you again for your help - muito obrigado! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Thanks to all of you -- Muriel, Liz, Celia, Rita and Laura -- for your suggestions and comments about this. I have understood from this that 'globo vesical' is an abnormal condition; I don't understand why the doctor used it the way he did (and I can't ask him!) but the text said very clearly 'globo vesical normal'. I ducked the issue in my translation by saying 'normal bladder'!
En su explicación, Joseph pregunta: what does this doctor [from Mexico btw] mean by 'globo vesical normal'?
The text does say "globo vesical," after all. The asker wanted a translation of "globo vesical," which I offered and seems to be correct out of context. If the condition is not normal, then the text is flawed, not the terminology. The question arises: Is it the translator's job to correct the flawed text? Is it the job of those commenting on the answer to reject an answer that corresponds to the question?

I still think that in this context the author is simply saying that there is one, but there's nothing pathological about it. Is the bladder only "normal" when it's not distended? I don't think so.

urinary bladder overdistension
Explanation:
Globo means "ball, globe": the urinary bladder may be perceived by palpation as a ball into the abdomen.
I do not know if an English corresponding term exists: usually I have found "overdistension"
Urinary retention and bladder overdistension may be missed surprisingly easily in the postoperative period especially with the altered sensorium that occurs with anesthetic and postoperative pain medications - http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1677...

Asker: Ciao Liz, and thank you for this additional posting; as you say it may help someone in the future. I always trust Gilberto's helpful answers. Almost two years later, though, I would still be confused by what this doctor was thinking.
