Spanish to English translations [PRO]
Medical - Medical (general) / pharmaceuticals (?)
Spanish term or phrase: Sustrato para la evidencia
From a paper about the treatment of balance disorders:

TABLA II
CLASIFICACIÓN DE LOS FÁRMACOS UTILIZADOS EN TRASTORNOS DEL EQUILIBRIO

Sustrato para la evidencia

A) Vasorreguladores
B) Neurotróficos
C) Psicotropos
D) Diuréticos
E) Sedantes vestibulares
F) Corticoides e inmunosupresores

The text is presented as a one-column table, and "Sustrato para la evidencia" is the column heading. I cannot see what this phrase is supposed to mean, let alone give an English equivalent. TIA

I had wondered about substrate (Stedman: the substance acted upon and changed by an enzyme), but if not, then sort of supports the logic:

sub·stra·tum
noun
plural substrata

Definition of SUBSTRATUM
: an underlying support : foundation: as a: substance that is a permanent subject of qualities or phenomena
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/substratum

thus "foundation" is the "basis"

The 'translation' I finally used was "substratum for evidence", as a literal translation of the Spanish based on the idea in this answer. I accompanied it with a Translator's Note strongly suggesting that the table heading was unnecessary for understanding the English text, and appeared to add nothing of substance, so should be omitted.

Treatment of the underlying cause of the symptoms

Explanation:
The way I understand it, balance disorders can have many different causes. Depending on the cause, treatment should be aimed at correcting high blood pressure, psychological disorders, local fluid retention, etc.

I think they mean to say with 'sustrato para la evidencia' something like 'that which underlies' (=sustrato) the (clinical) evidence, or, in other words, 'underlying cause of symptoms'.

Since the table lists a series of drugs and not a series of symptoms, I think I would go for 'Treatment of the underlying cause of the symptoms'.
