Spanish term or phrase: escritura automática
From a music biog:

realizo la cortina musical que será parte de un disco que ahora esta en proceso de grabación y que estará basado en la escritura automática, y en la literatura beat.

Is it improvised song writing?

automatic writing
Explanation:
Hi Wil,

The Spanish Wikipedia link - http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escritura_automática - leads to the English equivalent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_writing
Automatic writing is the process, or product, of writing material that does not come from the conscious thoughts of the writer. The writer's hand forms the message, and the person is unaware of what will be written. It is sometimes done in a trance state. Other times the writer is aware (not in a trance) of their surroundings but not of the actions of their writing hand.

Since the sencond part mentions beat literature, I think it might be a little adventurous to infer "songwriting" from the context.

Good luck!

Specifically, Kerouac, Burroughs and Ginsberg are known to have experimented with automatic writing, so it seems there's a clear link between the Beat generation and the writing concept. :O)
