Spanish to English translations [PRO]
Science - Nutrition / probiotics, yoghurts
Spanish term or phrase: cepa de fermento
Hi,

My translation is about probiotic and dairy product nutrients. The sentence is:

Participan en I+D para estudiar nuevas cepas de fermentos o "probióticos" que aportan beneficios de salud y para mejorar la calidad nutricional de los productos.

I know that cepa can mean "vine" but ferment vines does not really get any Google hits and sounds a bit odd when related to probiotics. The translation is about the Diet.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Creo que refiere a cuál tipo de levadura, o el fermento que sea, se utiliza.
Muriel Vasconcellos: 1:02am Apr 8, 2008: Sorry, but you accepted an answer that is seriously wrong.
Muriel Vasconcellos: 1:46am Apr 8, 2008: My apologies. I thought it was for yeasts only, and I've now found out that it's also for bacteria.
Muriel Vasconcellos: 1:47am Apr 8, 2008: But in that case, "culture strain" is still too broad. It's about fermentation; culture are grown for all kinds of purposes other than fermentation as well.
Deborah Lockett: 8:11am Apr 8, 2008: this article about yogurt talks about "probiotic cultures" and also mentions "culture strains" - maybe it makes things clearer: http://www.bluebunny.com/YogurtProbiotics.aspx
