central market Explanation: There are centrales de abastos all over Mexico. They are run by the local municipal government, which grants stall rights to vendors. Here is the results page for a Google search: http://www.google.com/search?q="Central de Abastos"&hl=en&lr... This kind of market has stalls that sell both retail and wholesale--fruits, flowers, meat, vegetables, canned goods, cleaning supplies, herbal remedies, basic furniture, shoes, clothing, bedding.... Small businesses from outlying areas go there, usually once or twice weekly, to pick up goods to sell in their own shops, or on the street. And locals do their shopping there, too. When I lived in Xalapa, Mexico, I lived a block away from their own central market, and watched the daily parade of buses, trucks, and foot traffic. The whole area around that market was full of shops that also had a mix of wholesale and retail business. Anything you could possibly need was right there! I really miss it, everytime I go to fix dinner now, because while I lived there, all I had to do was go out in the street and look around until inspiration struck. And everything was so good and fresh! Google search: www.google.com/search?q=%22Central+de+Abastos%22&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&btnG=Google+Search |
