All I can say is that it depends on the context, there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution, and I believe it calls for a near native-level command of the language to be able to choose the "Baby Bear's porridge" version each time it crops up.

In this case context is really essential. "Apostar por" is often difficult to translate well. There are several possibilities that often work in particular cases, such as "opt for/to" or "commit oneself to", but it's impossible to tell which is most suitable without seeing the sentence in which it is used.

Try the KudoZ glossaries too; look for "apostar" and also other forms like "apostado". Look at the archive entries, not just the glossary entries; sometimes the chosen answer (in the glossary) is not the best option for your context, and other answers given to the original question can be more useful.
