I suspect that this is a tiled patio of some famous Mexican institution. Is it? Sanborns sounds so English! This is clearly an example of the type of problem where a cultural reference is instantly identifiable to the original readership... but a closed reference to an outsider. "I stood upon the Pier Head gazing out over the Mersey".. may be nostalgic to a Liverpudlian like me, but meaningless to most of you I suspect :-)

Well, I happen to live in Mexico City, and this old house is called "Sanborns de los Azulejos" nowadays because it was bought by a store called "Sanborns Hnos." some time ago. The "azulejos" comes from the fact that this huge and old house was (and still is) covered with yellow and blue tiles. This house used to be the house of the Counts of Santiago de Calimaya, back in colonial times. Now, it is a landmark in downtown Mexico City. If you need a cultural reference, well, here it is. As for the translation, I would just leave it as it is, but I would also add a translator's footnote explaining all this. This house is unique in Mexico City. Raul gets the points because he was there first. Generally If I like all of the answers, I tend to give points to those who help me beat the deadline first. Thanks for the additional info though to the other three. It is worth adding comments even when you see that the question has been answered... you never know when the little added comment inspires a perfect choice of phrase. In this case I will put in the original and add a comment within the text based on "vuestra" experience of the place in question. (The format does not allow the use of footnotes).

Explanation:
Sanborn's is a coffee shop (and more) chain. Los Azulejos is a particular location in downtown México City. To be precise its address is Madero No. 4.
For your info, it is a beautiful building; the azulejos,hand made tiles in very dark blue color, are the reason for the name.

A transaltion would not be necessary since it is a proper name. Otherwise, just for kicks, you could call it the Earthenware house.

Explanation:
Famous, yes; it's on Madero, in the center of Mexico City. It's been a restaurant and a landmark for as long as I can remember. Buses of tourists stop there. The azulejos refers to the the fact that it's covered in beautiful blue and yellow tiles. Back in the sixties and seventies, a lot of the menu there was very U.S., BLTs, cheeseburgers, etc.

Además, es (o era, tengo años de no pararme en México) un lugar de reunión de estudiantes, políticos, burócratas, periodistas y paseantes, que se juntan para conversar sobre política y tomar café. Los domingos, familias y parejas se reunen ahí para comer. Paz y Fuentes se hubieran reunido ahí para leer el texto y comentarlo (pára ellos hubiera sido una referencia muy bien conocida y muy familiar). Además de ser un lugar informal, tiene la fama de ser un lugar barato (pero ya en la actualidad, debido al avance de la economia, ya no es un lugar tan accesible como antes)...
