"El "chayote" es una práctica a través de la cual los reporteros reciben compensaciones en dinero o en especie de la fuente que cubren, hecho que compromete su capacidad de informar objetivamente. La "gacetilla" es una inserción pagada publicada por un medio informativo como si fuese una nota informativa generada por el propio medio, sin advertir al lector que es una forma encubierta de propaganda política ni que su inclusión responde a criterios mercantiles."

Without context, I cannot be sure as to which is should be. A "planted reporter" would be one that is placed into the mix with the sole intention to serve a certain purpose by a certain "paying" party. A "paid-off" reporter would be one that is paid-off by a certain party in order to sway the slant of the story on one or more limited news events.
