| the individual constructs himself/herself from the outside in, to then emerge
Explanation: I sort of agree with the previous suggestions, but since we have not been given enough context then it is difficult to judge what level of the individual we are talking about. Deborah talks above about building the inner space of being.... I´m not sure. Is Lacan talking here at an ontological level? I am not saying he is or not, but we do not know, so I would be very careful with using the term 'being' if the original does not have it.
Also, I would keep "construct", since for instance elsewhere Lacan talks about meaning being constructed by language through culture. To construct and to constitute are important verbs in continental philosophy in general, in psychoanalysis too. Think for instrance of Derrida's De-construction. Derrida's term is the term it is for a reason.
Good luck!

...not to mention Lacan's most notorious theory of the "construction of the Self". To talk about construction would already suggest that the inner self is not already there, but that is constructed, structured from the outseide, in relation to the Other, the world and culture in general... I would keep 'construct' in your sentence, Núria.
Suerte
