El bello loco Don Quijote, pero loco, recibió muchos golpes, y en eso allá él, pero también dio lugar a un concretísimo empeoramiento de la vida de muchos de sus presuntos defendidos en su ridícula aventura a través de caseríos y aldeas manchegas

Rough draft:
The beautiful madman Don Quijote, quite the madman, was struck many times, and in that there he, but this also led to a tangible worsening of the lives of many of the people he was supposedly defending in his ridiculous adventure through country houses and hamlets in La Mancha

I think the author means that it's up to Don Quijote if he wants to receive the knocks and nobody should interfere because he's the one taking them.
