a fundamental principle of the child's social nature / relationship with society (other people)

Explanation:
"carácter social" refers to the child and is contrasted with "carácter individual" earlier in the sentence. The former means the child's individual nature and the latter, the way the child interacts with society. Being able to maintain functional relations with other people -- peers, parents, teachers, neighbours -- referred to collectively as "society" -- is a fundamental skill which children learn during their development. I've translated a number of social worker reports on persons applying to adopt children and the child's future social development is given great importance.
