Spanish term or phrase: discrecionalidad
Es parte de la explicación que da un fotógrafo sobre su obra...

"Aisladas de su contexto dentro de la obra las figuras elegidas son polisémicas, sólo la **discrecionalidad** para integrarlas reducirá esta ambigüedad"

Explanation:
"Isolated from their context within the artist's works the choses figures are polisemic, only a discretional criterion in their integration will reduce this ambigüity."
Así la traduciría yo.- No soy ni fotográfo ni plástico, pero me gusta el arte lo suficiente como para entender - creo - lo que el artista quiere decir.-

agree  Judith Kerman: Eek! Is the original an example of critical theory jargon? Direct translation would be "discretionality," which isn't a real word (I hope!) in English...ranslation

only analyzing them using discreet semes or only integrating them through using discreet semes

Explanation:
this comes from discreet units in semiology, philosophy etc. the use of the long noun is a bit hard in English, though you COULD use it. This is NOT new stuff nor is it is way out there.

Polysemy as opposed to discreet semes
