Clarification request(s) and response
Lucia Colombino: 12:57am May 1, 2008: Margaret, the sentence must go on to say "el pasado viernes" or "el pasado martes". This is a very frequent usage. (Not a nasty past.) ;)
margaret caulfield: 1:41am May 1, 2008: Lucia. I appreciate what you're saying, but there was no mention of "viernes" or "martes" or any other day of the week, nor date or month, just "el pasado...."
Lucia Colombino: 1:52am May 1, 2008: You're absolutely right. Not enough context, and your reading is possible too. But in my mind, bienvenida + asumió+pasado simply bring up this phrasing that I've read so often. I wouldn't know the most idiomatic way to say it in English. This is why

Pecosavil is now explaining she wants "asumir un cargo", maybe she should open the question again, if possible.
cmwilliams: 9:53am May 1, 2008: for future reference, you should provide the term you are unsure of in the heading and provide at least one full sentence as context.

Explanation:
Not sure what the president was "asumiendo", but if it was a rather suspicious or nasty past, I'd say "accepted" here.

But you didn't mention a "cargo". You stated "el pasado", so you've lost me here. Why did you accept my answer if you don't agree?

Pecosavil:

Suerte.
