Spanish to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Poetry & Literature / description of cattle pen
This is the continuation of the text where I asked for help regarding the term "media agua". The translator before me rendered "hasta el encuentro" as "up to the shoulders". I wonder if encuentro might mean the steers' inguinal area. If the mud reached their shoulders they could even drown in it!!!
Thanks very much, all yr suggestions will be much appreciated. Any translators who have experience as cattle rustlers especially!
"Encuentro" did have one meaning which I found on the net: "hiato", and this is why I thought, maybe this was the archaic use. I need a 19th century Spanish dictionary from BAires. X(
No lo creo. En ese caso diría algo así como "hasta las verijas".
Según S&S encuentro sería axila o "shoulder joint" para los animales, en cuyo caso la traducción original sería correcta.
It might sount vulgar, but really I think it meany "up to their testicles". SThus, as you indicate "up to their inguinal area (or parts), looks ok with me.
I have a small cattle farm and if an animal gets deeper into the mud than that, I better forget it.

up to their necks (or the back of their necks)
Explanation: Te paso la definición de la RAE que considero se aplica en este caso:
En los cuadrúpedos mayores, puntas de las espaldillas que por delante se unen al cuello.
"Espaldilla", por su parte, sería
"Cuarto delantero de algunas reses, como el cerdo, el cordero, etc."
No me suena hablar de "nape" tratándose de ganado. Creo que con decir "neck" basta. Tampoco usaría shoulders, que además no sería la parte correcta.
