Miguel consideraba que el hecho de aparecer en alguno de los medios donde le proponían un espacio podría ser de gran ayuda para contactar con la beneficiaria desconocida, pero la excesiva insistencia de alguno de ellos y el temor a no poder controlar el impacto de la aparición familiar más allá del propio interés que motivó el artículo lo hacía reacio a avanzar por ese camino. >> Cierto es que, cuando los medios de comunicación aplauden una idea y regalan los oídos >>, uno puede sentir la tentación de proclamar su solidaridad a los cuatro vientos.

Or "flatter one", or "flatter one's vanity/pride", if you prefer to use "one", but I think "you" works better, unless you're going for a fairly formal tone. "One" starts to sound quite stilted when it is repeated, and if you use it, the rest of the sentence will require it to be repeated.
There are a number of possibilities for "aplauden", and even the literal "applaud" could be used, but I think "praise" gets the sense and sounds fairly natural.
"Regalarle los oídos a alguien" means to flatter someone. "Regalar" here has the sense of giving pleasure, treating well:
"1. tr. Dar a alguien, sin recibir nada a cambio, algo en muestra de afecto o consideración o por otro motivo.
2. tr. Halagar, acariciar o hacer expresiones de afecto y benevolencia.
3. tr. recrear (‖ alegrar). U. t. c. prnl."

Asker: Thank you - once again - I like the simplicity of this option.
I am by no means an experienced literary translator and I'm beginning to realise that the main challenge of this translation is not getting carried away with the flow - as DLyons mentioned above! (I had done exactly the same)
