Lo entiendo completamente distinto a Mercedes. No creo que se trate de ningún erudito (un scholar), parece más bien un amateur. Diría que hablan de una persona sin una formación académica jurídica que de forma autodidacta adquiere conocimientos. Lo sorprendente es que a pesar de no pertenecer al gremio jurídico, devorando por su cuenta muchos libros ha legado a saber tanto que incluso aquellos que realmente pertenecen a la profesión (las autoridades judiciales) recaban su consejo.
