Spanish to English translations [PRO]
Printing & Publishing / typefaces
Spanish term or phrase: cartelas
the definition I have of the word is: a stroke which joins the stem with its serif? I've looked through typeface glossaries and can't find anything similar.

More context would be required to be sure this is the right concept. See link below to find out if cartouche is applicable in your case.

cartela
bracket

Explanation:
Presumably too late for your text (if not, you get very long deadlines), but my answer will be useful for the glossary. This appears to be called a "bracket" in English. This definition matches yours:

http://desktoppub.about.com/od/glossary/g/bracket.htm

Also, search for "cartela" in here, and you'll see it's another name for the "apófige", which is given as "bracket" in English.
