I would like to know the best translation of this word from Colombian Spanish into American English.

Explanation:
My ex-girlfriend used to be a PBX switchboard operator. It's just a main office line with scores of buttons for extensions. It's becoming obsolete now, since, with modern systems, all the front desk has to do is enter an extension number to forward calls.

I don't really understand why your question is based in the 'Psychology' field because this terminology is used in telecoms and networking. I'm curious.
