Note that there are more hits for horse mackerel than jurel. However since it's not a member of teh mackerel family, to be on the safe side I would use JUREL, as horse mackerel may be a popular name. Also JUREL is more transparent.

APPROACH AND METHODOLOGYSampling protocols were developed to guide the activities of the participating institutions inSpain, Greece, Italy and France. These cover sampling gear and methods, catch sorting andsampling, and formats for data collection.Positions of hauls were recorded using GPS data PC equipment. Data were analysed to produceestimates of abundance indices and length distribution by species for each sample stratum.The protocol document consists of an improved revision of the original MEDITS samplingmanual. The protocol provides a description of the trawling gears employed, samplingmethodologies and data processing techniques. A common file format for data storage andexchange is defined for the common use of all the institutions involved.An exchange of scientists between the participating institutions took place during the surveys toensure consistency of practices. In addition, two scientists from Slovenia and Croatia joined thesurvey in area M5, in anticipation of their official participation in the 1996 MEDITS project.MAIN FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONSThe 1995 MEDITS program built on experience gained during the 1994 MEDITS program. Theprotocol developed resulted in greater harmonisation of techniques and procedures for datacollection, collation and analysis on the target demersal fish stocks of the Mediterranean. Theprogram concluded that more multi-annual data is needed over a longer time scale to allow trendsin the population dynamics of the target populations to be identified with greater accuracy. Thenew Balkan country partners are earmarked for extending the range of the MEDITS surveys infuture.Comparison between the four countries taking part in MEDITS 94 and MEDITS 95 revealed thatthe number of sampling stations in the Greek Sea areas was significantly smaller than in otherseas. It was stated that data reliability should be improved due to the addition of 60 samplingstations for future MEDITS-GR (1996 and onwards). Fewer difficulties than with MEDITS 94were encountered due to the better knowledge of the sampling gear, better co-ordination betweenthe various working groups and modifications to the fishing gear.The overview report provides the results from all four countries involved. For the data collectedin Greece and Italy, more detailed results are presented.All data on length frequency distributions and species abundance indices for the target species aregiven. The trawl surveys reveal that the changes made to sampling gear as agreed in the protocoldocument were not effective for the Greek seas, due to the rough sea-bed in the area. As a resultof losing some trawls, a decision was made to revert back to the gear configuration used in 1994so as to obtain representative abundance indices for the target species. This meant that a directcomparison could be made with data collected the previous year, however comparing databetween countries was more difficult.The Argosaronikos region in Greece was identified as an important sub-area, not only because ofthe high abundance of the target species, but also because it is an important nursery ground forspecies such as European hake (Merluccius merluccius), common pandora (Pagelluserythrinus),red mullet(Mullus barbatus) and Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus).
