Spanish to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Spanish term or phrase: centímetro de flecha
From an investigator's report of a collision between two ships, describing damage caused to one: "Además, en la borda del mismo sector, comprometió la cubierta principal con una hendidura de DOCE CENTIMETROS DE FLECHA, con respecto a la horizontal, y un largo de 240 centímetros".

English translation:indentation of 12 centimeters
Explanation:
Entiendo que los buques colisionaron casi de costado, por lo que la hendidura es de 12 centímetros de profundidad por 240 centímetros de largo.

(crack of 12) centimeters in an arrowlike shape

Explanation:
Flecha means arrow, so I assume the damage caused by the collision of the two ships caused one of them a crack of 12 centimeters horizontally and 240 centimeters in length in an arrowlike shape.

deflection of (12) centimetres

Explanation:
flecha can also mean deflection in technical contexts (please see glossary, as there are bound to be some examples) and Google formore info.

In engineering mechanics, deflection is a term that is used to describe the degree to which a structural element is displaced under a load. The deflection of a member under a load is directly related to the slope of the deflected shape of the member under that load and can be calculated by integrating the function that mathematically describes the slope of the member under that load. Deflection can be calculated by standard formulae (will only give the deflection of common beam configurations and load cases at discrete locations), or by methods such as "virtual work", "direct integration", "Castigliano's method", "Macaulay's method" or the "direct stiffness method" amongst others. (See structural analysis textbooks for procedure.)

...cubierta principal con una hendidura de DOCE CENTIMETROS DE FLECHA, con respecto a la horizontal, y un largo de 240 centímetros

....On main deck it was caused a deflection of 12 centimeters of mid-span deflection distance from the horizontal axis and with a length of 240 centimeters.
