Dear Ltemes,
I some practical experience in the field as I was involved in regattas for some years (results were not always \'brilliant\', but this is another story).
I couldn\'t find the term \"respeto\" in the reference you quoted (Real Federación Española de Vela de VELA DICCIONARIO DE T ÉRMINOS NÁUTICOS ESPAÑOL - FRANCÉS - INGLÉS).
Additionally, I object to the use of the word \"storm jib\" (tormentina) because, as you wrote, it is a \"Vela equivalente al Foque pero de menor superficie que se emplea en condiciones muy duras de viento\". On the contrary, a \"vela de respeto\" is simply a sail you can use whenever the original sail becomes unusable for whatever reason.
Furthermore, I object to the use of the word \"jib\", because this is a specific type of sail, and \"vela\" is a generic term for any kind of sail (jib, mainsail, spinnaker, blooper etc.)

storm jib
Explanation: From my research I believe Vela de respeto is the same as Tormentín, which is:
TORMENTÍN
Vela equivalente al Foque pero de menor superficie que se emplea en condiciones muy duras de viento.

My source is the \"Diccionario de Términos Naúticos\" of la Real Federación de Vela Española, which is the Spanish Sailing Federation. Please consider this when choosing your answer and please take a look a the link I\'ve provided.

Valente- the reference for storm jib is under the word Tormentín. That is how they translate in the dictionary, and it\'s not something that I invented. It\'s in there. Now, it\'s up to our dear Asker to decide and, in the process, we will all have learned something new. my best wishes and thanks for the hearty discussion.
