Más bien, las condiciones de marginalidad se dieron en la arena del acceso al mercado de trabajo urbanizado, que a la vez exigía niveles mínimos de alfabetización y el manejo del castellano. Pero igualmente la marginalidad se debía a la falta de recursos para sostener a la familia en la parcela y lugar de origen.

Using "arena" here, though permissible, sounds a bit odd in English. Since "en la arena de" is synonymous with "en cuanto a", "when it came to" works nicely.

"Urban" will do for "urbanizado".
