Spanish term or phrase:comercialización artesanal
Hi
Can anybody give me a hand with the translation of this term? I think it means small-scale marketing but I do not know for sure. The text is on rural development strategies and self-employment.
Thanks!
Retomando la practicidad del presente documento desarrollaremos de manera más concisa los pasos técnicos que se han realizado desde el Proyecto xxx para la puesta en funcionamiento de la pequeña empresa dedicada a la producción, transformación y ****comercialización artesanal**** de productos locales de alto valor añadido.
Explanation: Marina Orellana's "Glosario Internacional" gives "small-scale" as the ONLY translation of artesanal. This is actually a coined word that wasn't even in the dictionary when I started translating xx years ago.

In any case, if you have any doubt, this is safer than the more specific translation "crafts," which, if it's wrong, is VERY wrong.
OK, well, very limited CONTEXT does not enable a very good view of the situation at all. I like Muriel's approach if it fits the situation (we have no idea of what kinds of products are involved here).
As long as you have a sound basis for what you are doing, it's best not to agonize, and yes, most writers do not pay a lot of attention to such things. You wonder if some of them are paying attention to anything.
Thank you very much for your help Henry! The whole text is quite dense, maybe the position of the adjective was not deliberate. I guess sometimes we translators pay more attention to these things than writers themselves, don't you think? Thanks again!
Yes, I noticed that. However, I am more inclined to think it was just a choice of words with no deep distinction attached. To say "crafts marketing" here would imply that their marketing efforts would also be of a local, small-scale nature.
I think in that case the Spanish sentence woul be "pequeña empresa dedicada a la producción, transformación y comercialización de artesanía" it makes a big difference in my opinion. "comercialización artesanal" and "comercialización de artesanía" are not synonyms.
I base my opinion on "pequeña empresa dedicada a la producción, transformación y comercialización artesanal" (small companies engaged in crafts production, manufacturing and marketing), and all those refer to the same subject.
Gracias Sandra y Henry. Estoy totalmente de acuerdo con Sandra, la traducción debe apuntar a que se trata de un método de comercialización, eso está claro, no a que lo que se comercializa es artesanía. Quizás sea una manera rebuscada del autor de decir "a pequeña escala" ;-)
Aunque la frase trata sobre la comercialización de productos locales (que suponemos son artesanías), la frase no parece referirse a las artesanías, sino a que el método de comercialización será artesanal. Sería bueno tener esto claro para determinar la mejor traducción.
Thanks for your proposal Henry. However, I think that your translation corresponds to " comercialización de artesanía". In this case, I think they mean a type of commercialisation that is called "artesanal", wheter you sell artesanía or any other good. Otherwise it would not say "de productos locales" but something like "de productos artesanales locales". I think the sentence is tricky, what do you think? ;-)

Explanation: "artesanal" in English has the same meaning as in Spanish. Here is an example of its use on the Internet, which is not just a poor translation from Spanish:
