To be completely honest I have absolutely no idea about this. I doubt it's "instrumental articulation" and I haven't been able to come up with anything that even sounds convincing.

There are lots of ways to say this, but the idea is "how they fit in (articulación) and how they are applied (instrumental)" - which can be covered with the single word "apply." What's missing, for it to make sense in English, is "the (particular) context."
The larger phrase would be:
"...that depart from the criteria in terms of their purpose or how they apply in the particular context."
