domestic partner

Explanation:
This politically correct option may be too broad for your purposes--is the element of "sentimental" (read:sexual) partner vital? And technically, "domestic partner" can be used to describe a legal spouse, of course, but I've never seen it used except in the sense you describe.

partner

Explanation:
I know partner could also technically refer to a spouse, but I think it's clear from the context that they're not married.

common-law spouse (wife or husband depending upon country)

Explanation:
Hi.

This depends a little as to whether you are looking for a UK or US translation, but a common one would be "common-law spouse".

All the best,

Tonia

neutral  philgoddard: I think this is a misleading term because it has no legal meaning in many countries.

-> True, however it does have a social meaning in many countries, in this case it is not a legal relationship, but rather a social one; moreover, "common-law" means it is not official, but rather thus considered by the common people.
