Very few hits for either "good representative method" or "approach." Any ideas?

Reference: proxy good method

Reference information:
"Método del buen representante", an expression that is nowhere to be found apart from this ST, is a duff translation into Spanish of the English expression "proxy good method", coined by B. Van den Berg et al. in an essay entitled "Economic valuation of informal care: lessons from the application of the opportunity costs and proxy good methods", Soc Sci Med. 2006 Feb;62(4):835-45
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16137814,
and taken up in later studies, including the one from 2008 cited by Shana. I think there can be no doubt that this is what it refers to.

Emma McIntosh at al. explain what it means in their book Applied Methods of Cost-Benefit Analysis in Health Care (Oxford: OUP, 2010), p. 47:

"The proxy good method, also known as the 'market cost method' or 'replacement costs method', is an alternative to the opportunity costs method. As outlined by Van den Berg et el., the proxy good method values time spent on caregiving at the (labour) market price of a close substitute, i.e. informal care time is thus valued at the wage rate of a professional caregiver."

See also this essay in Spanish: N. Jorgensen et al., "Los costes de los cuidados informales asociados a enfermedades neurológicas discapacitantes de alta prevalencia en España", Neurología 2008;23(1):29-39, where these issues are discussed esp. on p. 31. Here the proxy good method is more sensibly termed "coste de sustitución: valoración del tiempo dedicado a un determinado cuidado utilizando el precio de mercado de un servicio sustitutivo cercano" (compare the English definition cited above).

I think your ST has got this muddled.

Yes, I think so, Peter; "proxy good method", as explained by McIntosh et al., is the same thing as "replacement costs method"; they say so and the definition confirms it. It looks to me as though the author(s) of your ST just didn't understand what "proxy good method" meant (forgivable, perhaps; I wouldn't have understood it without help). Their translation, "buen representante", is a fiasco, frankly, and they'd surely never have chosen it if they'd understood the term.

But the fact that the ST is repeating itself is not a problem for you: all you have to do is use "proxy good method" for "método del buen representante" and "replacement costs [method]" for "costes de reemplazo". This is faithful to the original, and the fact that they're the same thing is the author's fault, not yours.

In fact "buen representante" suggests that they thought the proxy good method involved having a good proxy.

Asker: Yes, I suspected form the paucity of hits it coudn't be right although my ST seems to be repeating itself, therefore.
