Spanish term or phrase: convertir un intento

"Para los visitantes, el mejor en lanzamientos a distancia fue Wolkowiski, que convirtió los dos primeros intentos."

This is play-by-play reporting of a b-ball game. Lanzamientos a distancia would be a "far distance attempt" but then it goes on to say the player's first two attempt. In the end, I suppose convertir un intento means to score...

Since the reference is to "lanzamientos a distancia", it is obvious that shots during game play, and not "free throws" are being referred to. In English, "field goals" would be the correct term, but it would be stated as above.

In general, we speak of shots or shooting, and are classified as outside shots or shooting. Shot is a countable noun and shooting is a noncountable nouns, gramatically speaking.

Outside shots can ge medium range shots or long shots. If a shot is made from behind the key, it is worth three points instead of two and often called "a three pointer". Often, the distance is used to describe the shot such as an 18 footer, meaning that the ball traveled 18 feet through the air before going through the basket.

Baskets made near the or under the basket are often called close range shots which can be: a) a short jump shot; b) a hook shot: c) a lay-in or lay-up (called "entrada" in the Spanish of Mexico; and d) a dunk or slamdunk (called "clavado" in the Spanish of Mexico).
