Spanish term or phrase: carrera de resistencia
"Atletismo: Los alumnos se familiarizarán con las pruebas atléticas (salto alto y largo, carreras de velocidad y resistencia, lanzamientos)."

This is part of the sports curriculum of a school, so I'm afraid the context doesn't help much.

As far as I know, a "carrera de velocidad" is a "sprint", but I've found that longer races are called "middle distance" or "long distance" runs or events. Is there such a thing as an "endurance race" or "run", or do longer races just refer to distance?

long distance run
Explanation:
I ran cross country and track in high school, so here goes:
Sprints: 100 & 200 meter dash
Middle distance runs: 400, 800, and 1,500 meter runs
long distance runs: 5,000 & 10,000 meter runs & the Marathon

Note that "distance running" or "long distance running" is used in a general sense without referring to a specific distance, whereas long distance "run" is associated with a race of a specific distance.
A person who participates in 5,000 & 10,000 meter runs and marathons is often referred to as a "distance runner".
Also note that the 400 meter run is in somewhat of a gray area since it is occasionally considered as a sprint.
Hope this helps.

long distance

Explanation:
While there are endurance races, they are not usually held as school sports, they are "extreme" races.

For school I would say long distance (1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters), and then sprints (100, 200, 400, 800 meteres).

Good luck!

agree  kironne: strictly speaking, it's "endurance race", but in the context of a school, this could also apply. // My point exactly. The difference between the term itself and its meaning in the context. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_racing
32 mins
-> Endurance and stamina are required for distance running, but endurance would not apply in the terminology used at a high school or college or international track meet.

disagree  James Calder: sorry Aida, but this is the wrong term. Endurance races are across mountains and things like that. "Long and middle-distance" is term here.

-> Hi James, I think in this context you could be right. They probably mean children running 800m and above at the track.

Middle- and Long-distance races

Explanation:
At first I liked "endurance", but the more I looked at it, it does specify as a track and field event, which is not called endurance. Forgive me if my answer looks very similiar to the others, but I think the word race is necessary.
Also, another word for "sprint" would be "dash" (like the 100-meter dash)

Well, yes, in Spanish they would be known as a carrera de resistencia, but that is the gist of translation, in that context these terms would be used. And you do have to have certain distances involved to show endurance, don't you? Best of luck!

Example sentence(s):
  • Modern events include various sprint and middle- and long-distance races, relay races, hurdling, steeplechase, high jump,

Notes to answerer
Asker: Okay, so I get the point. Nobody would talk of an endurance race in the context of a school. However, in Chile we do call them "carreras de resistencia", even though they are definitely not as long as a typical endurance rate. I'll have to think about it. Thanks to all of you for your help!
