This generally refers to cross-country running, which I would say is the case, unless you have something else in the context that makes you think it might be motocross, because the term can also be used in that sense.

However, as pointed out, the reference is most commonly used for cross-country running event. Here is the calendar of cross-country events of the Real Federación Española de Atletismo. I randomly chose five of the events:
XXVI Cross Internacional de Venta de Baños
XXIII Cross Ciudad de Haro
XXII Cross Internacional Valle de Llodio
XXVII Cross "Espada Toledana"
LII Cross Internacional Zornotza
To make perfectly sure, perhaps you could try googling the name of the town where they take place (if mentioned) and see what else comes up.

Campeonato de Barcelona de Cross Escolar-V Cross Escolar de Les Corts
El próximo domingo 20 de enero, los escolares de Barcelona podrán demostrar sus habilidades atléticas con la 2ª carrera del III Challenge Escolar de Cross de Barcelona, el Vº Cross Escolar de las Corts. Els Jardins de la Maternitat (Travesía de las Corts,159), será el escenario de esta actividad dirigida a todos los atletas escolarizados de la ciudad de Barcelona.
La actividad consiste en dos circuitos atléticos, uno de pequeño y uno grande. Para participar en este Cross es necesario inscribirse previamente. Los atletas que se inscriban pueden hacerlo a uno de los crosses o a más de uno, mientras lo señalen debidamente. La primera carrera de este 3r Challenge se celebró el pasado mes de diciembre, y las próximas carreras se celebrarán el 9 de febrero (II Cross Escolar de Sants-Montjuïc), el 1 de març (II Cross Escolar de Ciutat Vella), y el 5 de abril (I Cross Escolar de Nou Barris).
El Consejo del Deporte Escolar de Barcelona, en colaboración con los Distritos Municipales de Les Corts, Sant Martí, Sants-Montjuïc, Nou Barris y Ciutat Vella, organizan el Challenge Escolar de Cros Barcelona Ciutat, que este año llega a la 3ª edición.
