Explanation: "Approach shoes are hybrid footwear with some characteristics common to both hiking boots and rock climbing shoes. Like a shoe or boot designed for hiking, a properly fitting approach shoe can be worn comfortably while walking for long distances. And, like a climbing shoe, an approach shoe generally has a specialised sticky rubber sole which maintains traction on steeper grades of rock." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approach_shoe
It basically means gear for the lower slopes of slopes of mountains.

I take the point about activity versus shoe type. Is "approach" an activity? I think it can be, though often you'd probably say something like "approach walking", which might be a better answer for this context. But it's a specific thing which needs to be distinguished both from hiking and from climbing, though it includes elements of both.

When you start actually climbing (escalada), even at lower altitude, you'll take off your approach shoes and put on some proper climbing boots.

Or indeed, bizarre though it may sound, "approaching". Aficionados distinguish it, as I have said, from trekking/hiking and from climbing:
"What is the best approach shoe? [...]
I've been following this thread since the start and I am a little curious to what jobs you are requiring of your approach shoes. How much climbing vs. approaching vs. trekking to an alpine climb (carrying 40 extra pounds) do you do in them? Just curious, thanks." http://www.mountainproject.com/v/climbing_gear_discussion/wh...
Another possibility is "approaching climbs":
"Great shoe for approaches and scrambling. I wish the tread (rubber toe material) would wrap all the way around the toe down to the tread, that would increase the shoe's technical climbing ability.
I have had the shoes for seven months and I wear them three to four times a week for approaching climbs and the sole has worn through to the cushining at the toe and heel. http://www.trailspace.com/gear/montrail/d7/
But the word "approach" should be in there in some form.
Az Liz points out, aproximación refers to a type of outdoor activity. I thought of climbing or mountaineering myself. Although approach shoes would obviously be the type of shoes you would use.
