creating space

Explanation:
Tricky one this. I've come across it before in research papers and this is the term I used, though it was used in a slightly different sense there. "Desmarcar" means to move away from the player(s) marking you, ie into space. The thing is we don't have an exact equivalent noun in English.

Here's a link for you: http://www.grassrootscoaching.com/blog/

One important football coaching skill is how to create space for yourself on the pitch. In this video, the football coach works with young players to show them some simple moves on how they can create space for themselves and lose their marker.

As you can see you can use it with Lisa's suggestion of "losing your marker", which is a good option too.

agree  Simon Bruni: "moving into space", perhaps? I suppose it depends whether the player is on or off the ball

-> Thanks Simon. I thought about "moving" and "finding" but "creating" gives the idea that the forward's trying to get away from a defender. Overlapping full-backs "move" into space without necessarily having to shake off a marker. Anyway, fascinating stuff.

finding space

Explanation:
the most simple thing to do in football, but often the most overlooked.

Please see examples referring to Beckham and Messi.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Losing your marker actually works really well, because in the defence section there's a similar little blurb about marking...nice symmetry. I'll wait the proper 24 hours, but looks like you've hit the mark (ha ha).
