This word is used by a Mexican in a survey report on a risk in Guatemala. It is obviously something to do with fluorescent lighting, but I have been unable to find the word in any of my dictionaries. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The full extract is as follows:

"Las balastras que utilizan las lámparas fluorescentes, a consecuencia de su calentamiento por el uso normal, suelen presentar derrames del material aislante (chapopote) y además del inminente riesgo de incendio, estos derrames pueden causar daños importantes a los equipos electrónicos"

Thank you. I have never come across "ballast" being used ina an electrical sense before, so I have learnt something new today.

Thanks to all "agrees" as well. I also note that it is in one version of the Collins dictionary as "balastra", but there is definitely no entry for "balastra" the 5th edition of Collins (1999 reprint).
