Explanation:
I got the English term from a Venezuelan civil engineer who is now working in the U.S. Flowable fill is a low-strength concrete, or sometimes cement-stabilized sand, used to fill voids in the subgrade of a road or foundation, exactly as "hormigón de limpieza" is used. It is a cheaper alternative to the use of compacted soil to level a surface, and much cheaper than high compressive strength concrete. A search on "Google" for both terms will yield a lot of information on the subject.

Excellent answer, Alex, thanks a lot. I still find it hard to find suitable translations of words through Google. The explanation s all well and good, but we need the translations. From the descroption, "flowable fill" sounds like what in England is (or used to) called "dry lean"??

Explanation:
On further investigation, I think my suggestion is off-base. There are numerous web sites in Spanish that mention "hormigón de limpieza" and it apparently isn't what I thought, nor do I have the English equivalent. Perhaps someone with experience in construction technology can come up with the answer.

El concreto u hormigón de limpieza (o nivelación) es una capa para emparejar la superficie, sobre la que luego debe colocarse el hormigón estructural.

Así explica la Comisión Permanente del Hormigón, España:

"¿El hormigón de limpieza debe tener una resistencia mínima de 25 N/mm2?

La Instrucción de Hormigón Estructural (EHE) establece, en su apartado 30.5. que la resistencia de proyecto fck no será inferior a 20 N/mm2 en hormigones en masa, ni a a25 N/mm2" en hormigones armados o pretensados.

No obstante, los comentarios al citado apartado aclaran que "los hormigones de nivelación o limpieza de excavaciones no se considerarán de naturaleza estructural y, por lo tanto, no está afectados por el valor de la resistencia mínima establecido en el articulado".

Thinset works great because of its bonding characteristics on (unpainted) concrete. On jobs where there is a bit of levelling to be done I'll sometimes level with the thinset and let it set up while doing something else, then come back later to install the tile.
