Spanish term or phrase: publicidad en buzones
Listed as one of the best ways in Spain of obtaining information about a vacation destination, along with advertising on TV, travel agencies, etc.
Does this mean advertising by mail or circulars crammed into mailboxes, or what?

fliers placed in mailboxes
Explanation:

Looking at the Oxford Business Spanish Dictionary, \"buzón\" includes all types of mailing: in American English, \"mailboxes, voice mail, mailing lists\"

disagree  xxxtazdog: no, this is wrong. Buzones are mailboxes in Spain, but the phrase refers to people going door to door and putting a flier in each apartment's mailbox (aka "buzoneo"). They are not mailed. (And if it were a mailing, "mailing" would be used in Spain.)

neutral  María Eugenia Wachtendorff: Hi, Mike! It's just "mailings", but this kind of advertising is sent through the regular post office service.

  -> Gracias Gabriela!

agree  Marijke Singer: I believe postage is not paid either: "hand-delivered promotional flyer drops" could be another option.

  -> Gracias Marijke, suena bien!

¿Has oído la expresión, o habré soñado? ;)

  -> No había lo había oido... Muchas gracias!

agree  xxxtazdog: absolutely right, this is what it means. No mail or stamps involved. I find several of these advertisements stuffed in my mailbox every day (in Madrid). And buzoneo is indeed the word that's used here.

mailbox stuffing

Explanation:
Coral's explanation is absolutely right, but here is an alternate term for you.

Another part of this job is ***mailbox stuffing***. We would give you a bunch of flyers and you would coordinate with your house superintendent to get the flyers into everyone's mailbox.

door-to-door leafleting

Explanation:
A good description for the process, at least in British English.

I live in Spain, but there's lots of advice to amateur publicists in Britain & US that includes the method, see links like the one below.
