You\'re right Lorna. Check this document for both \"playa libre\" and \"playas de uso libre\":

It would seem that your first case refers more to \"uso libre\", though it still has different flags to grade the safety for swimming.

Perhaps for the first you can say \"Safe beaches\" or just leave the same for both. You can see that a \"playa de uso libre\" is still rated according to risk, whereby a playa de uso libre de riesgo bajo doesn\'t have to meet a set of requirements which riesgo alto or medio would have to comply with. That\'s not in your text, so maybe you needn\'t worry about it. The link however, should prove useful. :O) :O)

Anabel Martínez: you're absolutely right, although the use of playa libre is quite strange, the green flag means this. We have to thank non-linguistic signals :) / No doubt about that, I'd say the original shouldn't have used the same term for both, it leads to confusion

Carmen Schultz: Just wondering, how can you tell when "playa libre" is a nudist beach?

-> Thanks Carmen. It's not easy or obvious, that's why I asked Lorna for specific context regarding location. I think in such cases, 'libre' means you are free to go naked or not, i.e. you don't have to be nude to be on that stretch of beach. :O) :O)

Arcoiris: Given the examples of the red and yellow flag, I agree that green means "safe", though my first interpretation was as Susan's. I didn' know free in the sense of nudist, but then it could be a public beach for nudists with safe swimming conditions ;))

-> Well, private beaches were abolished in Spain (in theory) years ago. They must all be publicly accessible and not be surrounded by privately held land cutting off access to them. When there is, you can enter through this stretch of land (again in theory).
