A Spanish tourism promotion agency report, speaking of its participation in a Canadian conference of travel agents:

"XX osequió a los compradores con un regalo consistente en un POLAR y un gorro para soportar los 20 grados bajo cero de temperatura."

"Polar" is insulated material, but what garment is referred to as a "polar"? A jacket?

Explanation:
It may be also a jacket, but at least in Argentina we refer to as polar when talking about a sweater made of that garnment.

polar clothing

Yo pondría polar clothing, y luego jacket..

Today we have a good understanding of how the human body works in the cold. With a knowledge also of the properties of certain materials we choose clothes made from a wide range of man-made and natural fabrics. For polar clothing to work effectively it must:

keep the body warm, especially fingers and toes
allow perspiration to disperse
allow free movement
be comfortable whatever the weather

Porque nosotros usamos polar como un sustantivo (al menos en Argentina). Decimos polar a un buzo, o campera abrigada.

agree  teju: From the context, it has to be something you wear in very cold climate, so jacket makes perfect sense. I imagine that it's like a ski jacket.
