Spanish term or phrase: puente de la purísima
Coincidiendo con el puente de la Purísima, Santa Susana acoge uno de los mejore raids hípicos internacionales de Europa.

Can anyone explain "puente de la purísima" for me?

"Puente de la Purísima"
Explanation:
As GoodWords and Jan say "puente" is for some days of vacation usually related to "long weekends". The "Purísima", literally "the most pure" refers to Virgin Maríia in one of her different "advocaciones" (the ways the Virgin is called).

However, if you look after "puente de la Purísima" and "Santa Susana" in Yahoo that allows you to make the search "in Spanish" and "in Spain" you will find more than 500 pages, most of them referring to "Puente de la Purísima" (with both P in capitols) so I would leave the name in Spanish and make a little note. Is the same as when they talk of the "Semana Mayor" (used mainly in Sapin) that is the same Holy Week but you cannot make a difference in English (and even it is not "written" I feel Semana Santa or Holy Week are just related to a religious date, nevertheless "Semana Mayor" is the tradition of the Holy Week). It is my opinion.

When you make the search you can read over the titles of the pages (no need in going furhter) that even the Virgin date of December 8th is all over the world, the Puente de la Purísima is mainly celebrated in Tarragona and Barcelona.

In the case you choose my suggestion, as a "note" I would use a mixture of some other options you got here as "long weekend (celebration) in the honor of the Inmaculate Conception, Dec 8th"

or:

During the long weekend, in the honor of the Inmaculate Conception (La Purísima), celebrated on Dec 8th, Samta Susana ...

In this second option, be aware that you are not explaining about the "Puente" so when people arrives would have to ask for some explanation... And be sure to write La Purísima with the corresponding capitols. The way you asked the questions "puente de la purísima" is kind of "no sense"...

December 8 holiday

Explanation:
It must be referring to the puente (holiday/long weekend) of the celebration of the inmaculada concepción de la purísima Virgen.

agree  Sheilann: Also known as La Inmaculada Constitución because December 6 is also a holiday to commemorate the 1978 Spanish Constitution. More than a bridge, its an aqueduct!

You might use this if you wish to make it clear what the weekend is originally all about.

long weekend of the Immaculate Conception (Dec. 8)

Explanation:
"Puente" is equivalent to a long-weekend for us. It is typical in Spain when a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday and they take the corresponding Monday or Friday as holiday also.

In this case, the holiday of "la Purísima" refers to the feast of the Immaculate Conception, which falls on Dec. 8

the Immaculate Conception holiday weekend

Explanation:
Puente is a concept that is limited to Spain as far as I know, but everybody will understand a holiday weekend. I would say other "holiday weekends" such as the June (bank) holiday weekend, or the St. Patrick's Holiday Weekend, so although it will not be familiar in itself, the concept is named and also identfied as a holiday, without having to specify exactly how many days anybody is getting off!
