Spanish term or phrase: pulmones de la ciudad
I have no idea of a good English translation term for this curious use in Spanish! It's from a walking tour description of Guadalajara, Spain.

"Bajando por la calle del mismo nombre se accede a otro de los *pulmones de la ciudad*, el Parque de la Concordia, con su coqueto quiosco de musica modernista, un buen lugar para sentarse a descansar, leer or simplemente, dejar pasar el tiempo."

Explanation:
I find the use of lungs rather ugly, and remembering that the term has long been in use for buffer zones amongst built up areas....The last option is culled from Alba's explanation and seems useful in itself.

Swathe of green is another possibility that comes to mind, but I'm remembering that the park, although v pleasant, isn't exactly huge - mainly walkways rather than green! Nice bandstand, true!
