Explanation: Sí, Lydia y su abuela tienen razón apurar puede significar "examinar atentamente", así lo dice tmb el DRAE.
Apurar en esta frase tien un sentido "activo", de movimiento de ir de un lado para otro.

I'd just like to point out this is perfectly correct Spanish - may be "flowery", but still. In the same way que podemos"bebernos la vida" se "apura la copa". It's hard to translate, but very descriptive -aprovechar hasta el fondo, sacarle el jugo.
Lydia: "Searching through" certainly works well here - this is a guided tour (discovery) of the city. So the idea seems to be that by "searching through a city... we find..." Yes - thanks Lydia (and your grandmother!)
Hi Patricia: Up to this point, I had no real reason to believe it was not originally Spanish, although I did think the language was a bit flowery. I agree with what you say - in any event the choice of verbs is a bit odd. Thanks!

Even though "apurar" is usually used as go quickly, go faster (please see the DRAE 4.) and it is not usual (maybe), it maybe "old-styled" as Lydia says, but the first option (1.) for the DRAE is "looking for". Apurando also gives the idea of looking for but not just looling for but with urgence, quickly look...
Apurando la ciudad as apurando un vaso de agua antes de salir (he drank and left) is quickly going through the city. (My understanding).
