Spanish term or phrase: zonas en resalte
Antiguamente, estas plataformas estaban ocupadas por viviendas pero con el paso del tiempo han quedado como zonas en resalte o miradores convertidos en zonas ajardinadas desde las cuales es posible asomarse a la hoz que forma la geografía.

I need to check my understanding of this.

overhangs
Explanation:
Hi Adam,

DRAE and Oxford definitions are almost identical, but frankly, I only really know the term overhang as used in scuba diving, so not sure if applicable:

OED: overhang, noun: a part of something that sticks out or hangs over another thing

DRAE
resalte.
1. m. Parte que sobresale.

Good luck!

In your text 'overhang areas' - or even verbalized: 'overhanging'/'overhung' areas

Well, I'd certainly hang on a bit.

Other alternatives that might fit are:

ledges,
shelves,
balconies (though I suppose you have this one for other purposes ni the text)

Cheers.

Dear me, I promise 'hang on a bit' was not a weak pun!

balconies/terraces

Explanation:
Not particularly faithful literally to the original, but the comment about gardens made me think of these, and so far I'm not completely convinced by any of the others (sorry amigos!). Promontories feels over-long - unless this really is the case which I can't see from the excerpt. Actually, on consideration, A's overhangs don't feel too bad. See he toyed with balconies too...
