Spanish term or phrase: Caza al salto con perro
La caza al salto (se puede realizar con o sin perro) es probablemente una de las modalidades más duras y esforzadas y más practicadas por los cazadores en el campo español.

I am having a few difficulties distinguishing between the different methods of hunting, and in finding the appropriate English equivalent.

Don't know if this is what you're talking about (gound it on a website, which I'll post in a minute!)

Jump-shooting - A method of duck hunting in which the hunter stealthily approaches ducks by boat, or by stalking toward water, until within range and then flushes them out.

agree  Patricia Rosas: think this is right, esp. if the context applies to hunting both with and without dogs...

-> definitely not! But we're a very small enclave here (just us and the next-door neighbour) amongst the very pro- hunting, shooting, and fishing fraternity - who actually think they own the place

Hunting with jump dogs

Explanation:
It´s a kind of hunting rabbits with different kinds of dogs. There are two types of dogs to hunt rabbits; jump and trail dogs.A good jump dog will eagerly approach any brush pile or briar thicket looking
for the prey. If a rabbit is in the pile or thicket and stubbornly wants to
stay there (maybe thinking it is immune from major disturbance) the jump dog
will go in after it, crawling into seemingly impossible places to get the rabbit
running. The trail dog meanwhile might sniff around the brush pile, or even
enter it somewhat, but not with the zeal of the jump dog.
Good luck!

neutral  Carol Gullidge: but if this type of hunting can be carried out "con o sin perro"...?...What I meant was that, according to Adam, his term could be carried out "sin perro" (See top line of his question)
