Not so much the individual words but making the sentence flow.

These might not be the best you can get, but someone must open the 'bidding'...

I suppose you could find more ideas by looking up synonyms, but you might have trouble stringing four together and still making it sound convincing - perhaps it isn't all that necessary either.

Maybe you could turn it around a bit. Otherwise it sounds a bit stifled in English. How about....

they engage in a head to head sprint, dodging and swerving as they go
