Se trata de una especie migratoria cuya población nidificante se estima en unas 350 parejas, de las que aproximadamente 30 nidifican en el territorio de Castilla-La Mancha.
Es un ave territorial que se alimenta de peces, reptiles, anfibios e invertebrados. Una buena parte de la población basa su dieta en el cangrejo de río americano. Nidifica en árboles, riscos en sierras y roquedos fluviales.
