Explanation:
A comarca (meaning shire, Spanish and Portuguese plural comarcas, Catalan plural comarques) is a traditional region or local administrative subdivision found in parts of Spain, Portugal, Catalan Countries, Panama and Brazil.

The comarca is also known in Aragonese as a redolada.

agree  Horticulturist: Even though "region" works too, I prefer "shire" fot its administrative status is similar to "comarca". "Region" in Spain is a much broader concept.

Shire


Explanation:
What's the context? Technically, it would be some sort of administrative area/division/province/region. But I know that "the shire" from a rather famous book by JRR Tolkien, probably referring to the Home Counties of England, is translated as "la comarca" in Spanish. Helpful? Irrelevant?
