Spanish term or phrase: capricho
really not sure, how "whim", "fancy", "caprice" or any of the other words in the dictionary are going to help me with this fairly lackadaisical writing!

"Como si se tratara de un capricho, el hotel XXX está situado en el corazón de la ciudad, entre Paseo de Gracia y Rambla Catalunya"

I'm sure you will think of something! Thanks!!

tucked (see below)
Explanation:
Leaving the text somewhat, but I might be tempted by this:

XXX hotel is *tucked* in the heart of the city etc

indulgence

Explanation:
me parece la palabra más apropiada en este caso, yo pondría algo así como "As if a matter of indulgence" o "owing, perhaps, to a matter of indulgence"

"As if it couldn't be any better", unforseen pleasure

Explanation:
"Como si se tratara de un capricho, el hotel XXX está situado en el corazón de la ciudad, entre Paseo de Gracia y Rambla Catalunya"

Literally you could say it as if it were an indulgent little pleasure.

But it makes more sense if you say: "As if it couldn't be any better", the hotel is located in the heart of the city between Paseo de Gracia y Rambla Catalunya (Las Ramblas)

agree  Deborah Lockett: yes because anything he replaces the little gem in the source text with will be "de trop", so he can get out of it with this little word.

Language variant: mere whim

Explanation:
In this context I see no better option than "as if by a whim" or "as if resulting from a mere whim"...
