yo usaría una frase como that appeared by the same time , o algo así, sé que no es una solución muy brillante , pero es que la expresión contemporáneo suyo está un poco forzada en esa frase en mi opinión.

Sé que ya seleccionaste la respuesta, pero "existing in the same period of time" no me da la idea de un volcán que apareció más o menos al mismo tiempo que otro. Todos los volcanes que conocemos existen al mismo tiempo, es decir, en el tiempo presente, pero ese no es el caso acá. Al decir "contemporáneo", creo que quieren expresar que se formaron en la misma época.
